4 Bookkeeping Books Everyone Should Read

Unless you studied finance in college, you don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of bookkeeping, and I’m not judging you for it. I have a master’s in Linguistics, and I know next to nothing about this, but my partner is well-versed in this matter, and the following are some of the books he recommends for anyone who wishes to get into the wasters bookkeeping.

Bookkeeping is the act of storing, recording, and retrieving the financial affairs of an individual, a non-profit organization, or a company. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn more about bookkeeping and some of the books you should be learning more about it.

1. E to Z Bookkeeping by Kathleen Fitzpatrick and Wallace W. Kravitz

Okay, this book isn’t for noobs of bookkeeping; it is the perfect book if you need a refresher on the matter and is a relatively quick read. If you have prior experience in bookkeeping and need to refresh your memory, then this book was made for you. It will be a great supplement to any textbook you choose.

For someone who has little to no knowledge of bookkeeping, this good could at times be read as gibberish and wasn’t entirely comprehensive. But my partner thought it was a good book if you have basic knowledge on the matter. The book lays the groundwork for bookkeeping that you will need and use on a day-to-day basis.

2. Bookkeeping Made Simple: A Practical Guide, Easy-to-use Guide To The Basics Of Financial management by David A. Flannery

Although this book approached bookkeeping from a different perspective from the other books on or list, my main issue with it is that it is riddled with typos. As someone who works in editing, this was a hellscape. If the book was just re-edited, then I believed that it would be more popular. If you aren’t someone who deals with numbers easily like me, then this book might be the one for you.

Aside from the typos, I think this is a pretty good book as it teaches you about bookkeeping in a way that teaches you the basics of management. If you want to understand the basics and can’t be bothered by an abundance of numbers, then this book might be your saving grace.

3. Bookkeeping All-In-One For Dummies by Lita Epstein

This book is an anthology of all the bookkeeping books for dummies, and it tells you everything you need to know about the elusive art of bookkeeping. This anthology is a collection of bookkeeping kits for dummies, reading financial reports for dummies, accounting workbooks for dummies, accounting for dummies, and bookkeeping for dummies.

If you want to learn more about accounting and its principles in general, then this is the book for you. Unlike most books on accounting and bookkeeping, this one is more stream-lined and lucidly written, which is a pleasure for someone who loves reading like me. This book was made for the layperson, and technical jargon isn’t just sprinkled in to sound smart.

4. The E-Myth Bookkeeper by Micheal E. Gerber, Robert Debbie, and Peter Cook

I don’t know about you, but when I see the title debunking or myth, I am already attracted to the content because, with the advent of the internet, there is a lot of fake news and misinformation that is being spread out on social media. However, unlike the other 3 books on our list, this book doesn’t teach you about bookkeeping but rather teaches you how to operate a bookkeeping business.

This book is a great start if you want to start a bookkeeping business, and many reviewers have suggested that this is the most practical book for any self-employed bookkeeper. It teaches you how to start a business from scratch, and this is what interested us most with it. This is a must-read, in my partner’s not so humble opinion.
